Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy. Not only were both topics tremendously interesting, but I really appreciated how Eric communicates so well with humor. It took me by surprise at first – you don't necessarily expect an extremely intelligent and successful writer who is sharing about his life experiences and the life of a brilliant theologian to be so funny. But he was. After the lecture there was a few minutes for questions and a student stood up and asked him about his use of humor in communicating. And I love what he said. He explained first that God made humor, it's not something that comes from Satan and we just borrow it sometimes. God intended for us to be joyful and to enjoy humor. He also pointed out that it disarms our conversations with people. It's so true! The whole time, I felt like he was so relatable and I never felt that he was talking above me. Laughing with someone, or making someone laugh is an instant bridge builder.
Anyways, I highly recommend this talk from this year's National Prayer Breakfast if you have a half hour!
